How can cities surmount the daunting challenges facing society today with regard to social inclusion, cultural diversity and environmental sustainability? And what role does education play in these?
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development assigns a central role to education in pursuit of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. It also recognises the ever increasing significance of cities, which are on course to becoming home to 80% of the world’s population by 2050. Learning is a crucial component to achieving the objectives laid out in Agenda 2030. From early-childhood learning to secondary schooling to higher education and non-formal vocational training – every city resident should have the possibility to learn throughout their lives. Especially socially disadvantaged groups need a perspective for a more promising future – and that comes with education. The Learning Cities programme not only supports institutional, state-organised educational opportunities, but also those collaboratively carried out by civil society and the business sector.
